  • The Search for No God

It's been brought to my attention recently that there is an ever-increasing search for no God.  By this, I mean that it seem that people are searching for a reason to believe that there is no God.  Perhaps it is that the spiritual climate is rising to a degree where even those who claim that there is no God are searching for substantiation of this belief.

It has always been the case, perhaps, that people like to validate their own beliefs, especially with those who are respected and admired by society, or at least by those intelligentsias.  So I find it curious that recently, the "champions of atheism" has sold almost a million books, some on the NY Times Bestsellers list for long periods of time.  Titles include "The God Delusion" (R. Dawkins), "God is Not Great" (C. Hitchens), "Letter to a Christian Nation" (S. Harris), and "God: The Failed Hypothesis" (V. Stengler), among others.  Many of these are written in what seems like apologetic form, which I find pretty fascinating...  a dusty observation maintains that it is strange to note that even the title "atheist" is in a frame of reference to something they do not believe exists.  To simplify, I suppose it's like defining yourself by something you do not believe.  I think there is a movement somewhere to try to define this kind of life by centering in something other than God...  (what is that alternative to atheism/agnosticism?)

Anyway, this muse has come about from reading an editorial on the WSJ.    One of my favorite lines: "like philosophy, religion, rightly understood, has a beginning in wonder."  There are so many things that cannot be explained, and so much beauty and complexity in this world...  perhaps this is why nature draws us close to God...  there is a certain awe that draws us to One who is the most awesome, the most beautiful, and the source of all that is wonderful...

People everywhere are searching for truth and validation.  They are searching for people who they can point to and say, "Yes!  Me too!"  And yet in many instances, the case for atheism has fallen flat, while Lee Strobels' book itself, "The Case for Christ" has sold 7x more than all the atheism books combined...   standgap

There is a thirsty and hungry people out there.  Can we be the ones to stand in the gap?  Can we be the one who will show the way and point to Christ?  The ones who will lift up and encourage, who will provide food during the famine, and water during the draught...

O Lord I want to be in that number..!

Okay, first of all, if the ever-increasing number of people who are looking to disprove the existence of a god has just come to your attention, how do you know that the number is increasing.  Second of all, the U.S. was founded upon Christianity, it is still made up of somewhere above 70% Christians so it makes complete sense that the number of people buying christian books would be 7x larger than the number of people buying atheist books.  duh.  I would say that you argument falls pretty damn flat.
